15 Bean Soup

It's Tempt My Tummy Tuesday! My sister, Lisa, and I co-host this blog carnival. We share recipes, kitchen and cooking tips, restaurant reviews, and anything food related that you want to share. You know the rule of a blog carnival, please mention the blog or TMTT in your post and link back to us. Don't forget to use Mr. Linky, he lives at Lisa's blog.

Last week I was in the mood for some beans and rice. I had a bag of Hambeens Cajun 15 Bean Soup. Now, as you well know by now, I don't always follow the recipes like they appear anywhere. I'm a fan of making things my own way and with the ingredients I have on hand.

So, You are more than welcome to check out the recipe on the back of the bag HERE
. This is my version of their recipe. I served it over rice.

In my crock pot, I put the beans and about 3 quarts of water. I then added 2 cans of diced tomatoes. Turn crock pot to high and covered it. After two hours I added 1 onion medium chopped in large pieces and a clove of garlic chopped. After 2 more hours I added 1 link of smoked sausage cut up. I then let it continue to cook one more hour. In the last 30 minutes I put in HALF of the Cajun seasoning that came with the beans. I wanted the kid to eat it and I did not want it to be too spicy.

When it was all said and done... it was good! I served it over rice.

It was so funny seeing the bean soup bag, as I was recently looking at it in the store. I will definitely buy it and try your version.

This is how I make my 15 bean soup too. When I was a kid we always had the soup as a side item and without the sausage in it; instead we used a ham or bacon for flavoring. But I like using the sausage better! And serving it over rice makes it go a lot further. I had never thought to do this until I went to my husband's family reunion, and his dad was making gumbo (which has rice in it)

The seasoning packet has MSG in it. I'd avoid using it if I were you.

When you see monosodium glutamate, maltodextrin, autolyzed yeast extract or hydrolyzed proteins of any kind on an ingredient label, the product has MSG in it.
